The Hythe & it's History

A first blog and where better to kick it off than starting with Ye olde Hythe building itself! - "The Hythe Granary" of Hythe Quay Colchester.

This rather dark, imposing, victorian brick building would have stored the grain & seed delivered by the boats & barges that traded their cargo up and down the River Colne.

Nowadays it is home to Blackheath Salvage Reclaim Yard & Hythe Antiques. You can find everything you want over the three floors of this wonderful building, from architectural salvage and period artifacts, gates and railings from demolished stately homes to picket fences from chocolate box cottages. Factories, hospitals and warehouses have all sadly met their demise through demolition however Blackheath Salvage & Reclaimation have saved these historical treasures and through time and trend are now back in glorious demand.....hallelujah!

So, if you are after a fireplace with original tiles, fire irons and brass fender or a big, old front door complete with latches and bolts you will find it all here!

If your a bit of a salvage hunter or a reclaim rookie, then prepare yourself for three floors of bygone history. Floor bricks, sash windows, mirrors & lighting galore and if you're after something a bit quirky, then visit the top floor!
